Big – The Musical by The Morecambe Warblers, Lancaster Grand Theatre
Ah, Big! One my favourite films when I was a lass.
I have to admit, though, I was dubious as to how the Tom Hanks classic would translate to the stage, let alone as a musical.
But the Morecambe Warblers pulled it off with ease.
Despite a disappointingly poor turn-out at the Saturday matinee, the Warblers entertained the crowd from the word go, with a winning combination of original songs, dance and comedy.
Stand-out performances came from the fantastic Chris Isherwood as the Tom Hanks character Josh, and talented teenage actress/ songstress Emily Schofield as his love interest, Susan, while the rest of the cast played their parts well.
Hats off to the Warblers for their (almost) convincing American accents - not an easy task for a group of amateur actors.
Reece Cusimano and Edward Lees played convincing pals as the young Tom Hanks and friend and the cast did a great job re-enacting all the highlights from the film.
The ingenious floor keyboard in the toyshop scene was brought to life at The Grand as Chris Isherwood and Ian Newman frantically hopped and skipped their way across the stage, ensuring they never missed a note.
A comical addition and almost worth the ticket price alone.
My only criticisms were the play was a little long, especially for the young members of the crowd, and the songs weren't very memorable. But in all this was another hit for the Warblers.
Ian Newman, the show's publicity officer, said: "Overall, the audience enjoyed the show but it's disappointing that more people didn't turn up to see it.
"It was a challenging show and I think it was pretty true to the film."
Once again, well done to all involved. A Big success for Lancaster Grand.
