MORECAMBE Royals avoided a potential banana skin in the final first round tie of the Adam and Gaskell Senior Challenge Cup on Saturday when they swept past Division One side Slyne-with-Hest (LCC) 4-0.
The Royals were in control for most of the game with goals being scored by Nick Edmonds, leading scorer Gareth Holmes, Chris Morrow and the goal of the game by veteran Stuart Talbot.

In the Premier Division, Storeys still lead the way after a 3-0 win over Ingleton, who have only lost twice, both to Storeys.

Storeys went ahead early on when Mark Chisholme calmly rounded the keeper to score. The lead was doubled halfway through the first half when Steven Stirzaker chased down a long ball and lobbed the keeper for a 2-0 lead.

The clinching goal came in the 70th minute and it went the way of Storeys when good work by Stirzaker and Liam Jeffrey resulted in Chisholme scoring from almost on the goalline.

TIC Dynamos are second after a vital win at Carnforth Rangers, who had Lancaster's Ben Price back in goal.

However it was his opposite number Matthew Humpage who took the eye with several first-class saves.

Rangers were mainly on the front foot with TIC playing on the counter-attack.

Rangers drew first blood when Matthew Garwood finally beat Humpage but TIC responded with a Steve Wiggins tap-in.

The winning goal came from another counter-attack by TIC when, after a Carnforth corner, they broke and a quick pass forward found Martin Lewis who slotted the ball into the net.

The defeat for Ingleton allowed Highgrove to go third with their second successive victory with 10 men. Highgrove had a player sent off for two cautions but led 1-0 at half-time against Kirkby Lonsdale.

Kirkby improved after the break with Nathan Jackson scoring twice for them but Highgrove had the edge with Damian Graham scoring and Luke Ogley hitting the winner late on.

Marsh United had a very good 6-0 win over Galgate with Jordan Sparks scoring a superb hat-trick and other goals from Simon Marshall, Dave Shorrocks and Liam Moffatt.

This win moves Marsh into seventh position but with games in hand over the leaders.

Morecambe Hoops felt unlucky to lose 5-2 to a good Cartmel after being level 2-2 at the break. Des Martinez and Dean Threlfall scored for the Hoops and Scott Burrows and Tim Brookes for Cartmel.

The Hoops then suffered two injuries and Cartmel took advantage with Joel Drinkall scoring a hat-trick.

The game between the bottom two, Swarthmoor Social Club and Caton United was a poor clash, both sides sharing the points in a 2-2 draw. Mike Webster and Graham Wilcox scored for Swarthmoor and Dave Bamford (2) for Caton.

The first round of the Squires Sports Bar/ Fisher /Howson Remembrance Cup brought no shocks with results going to form.

Boys Club Reserves were thrashed by Carnforth Rangers Reserves 7-2, Robert Pearcy scoring a hat trick.

College AFC Reserves had an easy 6-0 win over Heysham Reserves with Matthew Vernon on target twice as the College ran riot after the break scoring four times.

Cartmel Reserves got their first win of the season, beating Millhead Reserves – from three divisions lower – 3-1.

Kirkby Lonsdale Reserves are having an excellent start to the season and deserved their 4-0 win over Gregson Reserves with a stunning hat-trick from 16-year-old Grant Troughton.

Marsh United Reserves scored three good goals to see off Galgate Reserves 3-1, Lee Stuart, Michael Stevens and Robert Reay all scoring.

Leaders of Division Three, Halton Rangers Reserves, were unlucky to lose to Division One side Morecambe Royals Reserves.

Halton could not convert their many chances and were made to pay as the Royals scored the winner from the spot through Luke Suligowski.

Morecambe Cricket Club Reserves swept past Arnside Reserves 3-0 with a brace from Glynn Carroll.

In the Division One Holdens Solicitors/Gibson Cup first round, Ingleton Reserves trounced Torrisholme, winning 7-1 with Alex Hartley scoring four goals.

In League matches, leaders Bowerham are now eight points clear after beating Grange 4-1.

Bowerham never looked to be in danger of losing, scoring goals through Adam Harris, Joe Bouskill, Andy Doggart and Tom Devlin.

Millhead and Boys Club shared the points again with their second draw, this time 1-1 Dominic Wooff put Millhead into the lead only for Aaron Pearce to equalise for Boys Club who had the better chances.

In Division Two, Overton won the local derby beating Middleton 2-0 with Adam Willis and Peter Marin getting the goals. Overton were always in control of the game but had to defend well whenever Middleton broke away.

Overton are now up to third with Middleton dropping to fourth from bottom.

Westgate Wanderers were kicking themselves after losing 2-1 to Swarthmoor Reserves.

They took the lead after just five minutes when leading goal scorer Stuart McClean scored but a first-half equaliser and a late second goal turned the game Swarthmoor's way.

Furness Rovers threatened to over run a determined Freehold side with some good open football but could only score once through Joe Leslie.
Freehold defended well and just about deserved their win with goals from Richard Simister and Phil Bushell.

In Division Three, Squires FC went joint top after beating Bolton-le-Sands Reserves 4-1 in a good game. Jay Harrington with two goals led the way for Squires who were the better team in the early stages, Lee Fox and Richard Howard scored the goals. Young Nicholas Pidcock replied for Bolton le Sands.

Squires remarkable record runs on. They lost their first league game of last season and have not lost a league game since. Bolton-le-Sands were champions last season but are sliding to the wrong end of the table this season.

Burton Thistle are the division's draw specialist this season having drawn six of their nine games.

Against Heysham, they took a 1-0 lead with a Chris Plevey goal but Heysham responded when their keeper Chris Robinson launched a massive kick downfield, the ball bounced once and over his opposite number and into the net. Burton hit back again and went into a 2-1 lead when Dan Nicholls scored but Heysham levelled again through Joe Brandley.

In Division Four, the shock of the day was not only the defeat of Moghuls but the manner in which it lost their 100 per cent record.

They were second best to the veterans of Morecambe Gold who now take over as league leaders.

The Morecambe side used all its experience to score seven goals without reply as they held Moghuls to long range shots.

Man of the match was the fast Eddie McGaragher who scored a brilliant hat-trick to set his team on the way. Other goals being scored by Dean Kennedy, John Hargreaves, Nigel Borrass and veteran substitute, 48-year-old Sean Sunderland.

Villa Royale bounced back to fourth place by thrashing AFC Moorlands 7-3 with goals from. Scott Butterworth (2), Robert Cousins, Robert Austin, John Lloyd-Raine, Mitchel Dyson and Kieron Brookes.

AFC Moorlands, who beat Villa Royale 4-0 in their early season encounter, were hardly in this game but did manage goals from Andy Bushell (2) and Neil Fitzimmons.
