IN response to Coun Ron Sands' letter (12/11/08) in The Visitor asking 'why relocate Yorkshire Street Pharmacy?'
We are concerned that Coun Sands may not have been in full possession of all the facts.
The Government recently launched a New Pharmacy White Paper (Building on Strengths – Delivering the Future) which will mean significant reforms in pharmacy ser
vices.
There is clearly a move away from the traditional 'chemist shop' as the Government wants to see pharmacies expand and improve the range of services they offer to people.
At Yorkshire Street Pharmacy we are keen to have the opportunity to do this but are currently restricted from doing so by constraints at our current site.
We have become vulnerable because we are a small, traditional 'Chemist Shop' restricted by our current accommodation and our future has become uncertain.
It is in order to survive that we have decided to act now and take the unprecedented step to relocate.
We understand that, if we are successful in relocating, the change might be unsettling for some of our customers but we are confident our service will remain convenient, efficient and personal, as all our current staff will be moving with us.
We feel, however, what is more important still, is the move will mean the future of a vulnerable 'at risk' chemist is secure.
The proposed new site is very close, co-located with a GP surgery at 1 Heysham Road, with a convenient bus stop outside.
We understand the GP practice has agreed plans to significantly improve and enlarge the reception space to address Coun Sands concerns regarding the overcrowding issues and improve their patients' experience.
