A MAN who died after his car was struck by a train at Wraysholme level crossing, near Grange-over-Sands last Monday, November 3, has been identified.
Jonathon Crabtree, 41, from Ulverston, Cumbria, appeared to have driven his red Mitsubishi Carisma onto the crossing as the warning lights were flashing.

He died at the scene and his body was taken to Westmorland General Hospital, Kendal.

Two dogs were also in the car and were uninjured.

The collision was reported at 12.38pm on Monday, November 3, and involved the 0927 Northern Trains Carlisle to Lancaster service, which remained upright and on the track. The car was wedged under the front of the train and the 32 passengers were uninjured and bussed to Grange-over-Sands station.

A full report is being prepared for the coroner.

In February 2008, a car was hit by a passenger train at the same level crossing.

The Land Rover was struck by a Manchester Airport to Barrow train critically injuring the 31-year-old car driver who was airlifted to Lancaster Royal Infirmary.

Both the train driver and guard suffered minor injuries.

No injuries were reported among the 22 passengers.
