MAGISTRATES have closed down a flat in Lancaster which police say was the centre of a catalogue of complaints from nearby residents.
The flat at Brunton's Warehouse on Lancaster Quay has been boarded up for three months after police, local residents and other agencies came together to obtain a closure order from city magistrates.
One witness said up to 100 people visited the f
lat and there were constant complaints about Class A drug use and anti-social behaviour.
The Closure Order means that no-one can use the property for three months and it is a criminal offence for anyone to enter the house unless authorised by police.
"The area is a pleasant one and popular one and it is a shame the anti-social behaviour carried out by a few individuals should spoil the quality of life enjoyed by the residents and the visitors," said PC Mark Finch.
"The residents deserve to live their lives in peace and a closure order on these premises will improve their quality of life and improve the area in general.''
Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Cath Griffiths added: "I have spoken to an elderly resident who will not go out of her flat and is so afraid that she physically shakes when talking about any problems.
"She is also afraid to answer her intercom system after receiving abuse from strangers asking to gain access to the flat in question.''
